## The Bathroom Fall Problem

The bathroom is the most dangerous room in the home for seniors. According to the CDC, 235,000 people over age 15 visit emergency rooms each year due to bathroom injuries, and adults over 65 account for the majority of serious injuries. The leading causes are: (1) slipping on wet floors, (2) losing balance while stepping over a tub wall or shower curb, and (3) falling while getting up from the toilet.

All three of these causes are preventable with the right bathroom modifications.

## The Six Essential Senior Bathroom Modifications

### 1. Curbless Walk-In Shower
The single most impactful modification. Eliminates the trip hazard of stepping over a tub wall or shower curb. A curbless shower is flush with the bathroom floor, allowing entry with a walker or wheelchair. Cost: $4,500 to $12,000.

### 2. Structural Grab Bars (ICC A117.1 Compliant)
Installed to ICC A117.1 and ADA Standards:
- Horizontal bars: 33 to 36 inches above finished floor
- Vertical bars: 42 inches above finished floor
- Anchored to 2x6 structural blocking (not drywall anchors)
- Capable of supporting 250 lbs of force in any direction
- Bar diameter: 1.25 to 1.5 inches
- Clearance from wall: 1.5 inches
Cost: $350 to $800 per bar installed with blocking.

### 3. Non-Slip Flooring (DCOF 0.42+)
Tiles with a Dynamic Coefficient of Friction (DCOF) rating of 0.42 or higher, the scientific standard for wet-area slip resistance. Bath mats are not a substitute -- they slip, bunch up, and create their own trip hazard. Cost: $12 to $25 per sq ft installed.

### 4. Comfort-Height Toilet (17-19 inches)
Standard toilets are 15 inches high. Comfort-height toilets are 17 to 19 inches high, making sitting and standing significantly easier. Cost: $500 to $1,200 installed.

### 5. Handheld Showerhead on Slide Bar
Allows bathing while seated. Installed on a slide bar so it can be used at any height. Cost: $150 to $400 installed.

### 6. Adequate Lighting
Seniors require 3x more light than younger adults. Minimum 50 foot-candles at floor level in the shower area. LED fixtures with high CRI (color rendering index) for accurate color perception. Cost: $200 to $600 per fixture.

## Why Curbless Showers Are Better Than Walk-In Tubs

Walk-in tubs require the user to enter the tub, close the door, fill the tub, bathe, drain the tub (5 to 8 minutes), and then exit. The user sits in a cooling tub while waiting for it to drain -- a hypothermia risk. Walk-in tubs also cost $8,000 to $20,000 installed. Curbless walk-in showers cost $4,500 to $12,000, are faster to use, easier to clean, and eliminate the drain-wait problem entirely.
